• Important notice: HiRadMat extraction is only possible while LHC is running with a fill. If the beams in LHC are dumped, SPS will only be filling up LHC, which takes at least an hour (if everything is running smoothly) from beam dump in LHC to extraction to HiRadMat being ready again. Be prepared that dumps can occur at any time and that dumps are occurring more often during the day.
  • With this in mind we strongly advise experimental teams to work with multiple teams and shifts to maximize the time beam can be extracted towards the experiments.
  • After the filling of LHC is finished and extraction to HiRadMat is operational, we advise to test the stability of the beam (beam sigma and beam position) using low intensity pilot beams before resuming the experimental program. In general, the beam conditions at HiRadMat are very stable.
  • The SPS hub in the CERN control room offers multiple windows machines with remote desktop capabilities to ethernet registered devices. The number of those machines is limited, so please try to minimize the number of machines you need for your experiment (if a large number of screens is necessary please utilize the HiRadMat control room).
  • Please respect the instructions of the SPS operators when you're in the CERN Control Center (CCC). While we try that at any given time a member of the HiRadMat team is present, the SPS operators are being kept in the loop as much as possible.
  • If you have any questions regarding the beam conditions (bunch, train & pulse structure, accessing certain beam diagnostics in the SPS ring) SPS operators will kindly assist.
  • Shift exchange of SPS operators occur at XX, XX and XX am/pm. Please communicate special inquiries to the operator team ideally before shift exchanges.
  • A well prepared, clear and concise beam pulse list is appreciated by both the HiRadMat team and SPS operators. Changes to the pulse list are possible on-the-fly within discussions involving the operators and the HiRadMat facility. But please note that this is only possible within the proton budget granted to the experiment.
